I have always been fascinated with mythology and theology of all types. And the story of Persephone was always one that I particularly loved.

The cliff-notes ~  Zeus conspired with the underworld to have her abducted to become the bride of Hades. Her mother Demeter was furious when she learned of the conspiracy and refused to let spring blossom until her daughter was returned. Zeus consented, but not before Persephone had consumed the fruit of the underworld (Pomegranate seeds) and was therefore forced to spend part of the year in the underworld with her husband. Her annual return to earth in the springtime brought wonderful flowering, crops, and all around bounty. Her return to the underworld thus marking winter. Growing up in Pittsburgh, with our terribly cold and grey winters, followed by lush green springs, this story hit especially close to home.

In the piece, she fights off the winter and the underworld (represented by the snake) with her flora & fauna friends...all done in incredibly vibrant color to really give a feel of vibrancy and rebirth.
